Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are so small that you wouldn’t know they are already in your house until you’ve been bitten. These only grow between five and seven millimeters in their adult phase and only up to one and one-half millimeters in their nymph stage.
The appearance of these bugs resembles that of the common tick or a tiny cockroach; hence, most people mistake them for either of the two. Bugs of this variety love to dwell under your bed mattress or any place where you commonly doze off such as the couch; thus, the name bed bug.
These bugs undergo six stages in their life cycle. They molt through the entire process of their life cycle until they can become fertile, mature bugs.
What Happens When You Get Bitten?
You will know that you’ve been bitten by these pesky bugs when you see rashes appearing on your skin, usually after spending a full night’s rest on your bed. While these bugs are not night considered as nocturnal, they are nonetheless most active in the evenings.
Since they wreak havoc in the evenings, they can remain undetected while they feed on your blood. These bugs however are not blood-sucking creatures that strictly feed off humans. They feed on any warm-blooded animal as well so your dogs or cats are not safe as well.
From the saliva of the bugs, you may instantly develop allergic reactions from rashes to itching and blisters. More serious allergic reactions could include difficulty in breathing. When this occurs, a trip to the emergency room of your local hospital or medical facility is highly recommended.
How Do They Feed?
These bugs use two tube-like feeding implements to pierce your skin. These creatures are very methodical in their feeding habit in that they use one tube to transfer saliva to your skin to stop the blood from clotting while the other tube sucks out the blood from you or another host.
Did you know that they feed off of you for at least five minutes? That’s five minutes of sucking out your blood before they go back to their hiding place! After the feeding, this is when you usually start to feel the most common symptom which is itching.
The frequency of their feeding is typically between five and ten days which means that if you don’t eliminate them right away, they can feed off of you around three to six times per month.
For this reason, instant eradication the minute you discover their existence in your home is vital.
