Borate for Mites

Aside from removing ticks and fleas, you can also use borate on mites. The application process is no different from the way it is applied for flea treatment. Here are the steps you need to take.

Step 1

Determine where the mites are. Usually they can be found in clothing, pillows, linen, carpets and rugs. This will give you an idea of how much borate is needed for the treatment.

Step 2

Move the furniture aside on the carpeted areas. Get the vacuum cleaner and vacuum the areas. Be thorough when you vacuum the carpets and rugs.

Vacuuming the flooring and carpets will get rid of the dust and dirt as well. Removing as much of the dirt as possible will allow the borate to work successfully. Vacuuming will also remove a lot of the mites.

Step 3

Sprinkle the borate on the carpet, rugs, furniture, clothing and linen. Do not forget to check the headboard for mites. When you use borate on mites, you can use a broom to work the acid into the carpet. Some of the mites may be embedded deeply. Work back and forth until all traces of the powder are in the carpet.

Step 4

The borate should be left on the carpet for at least a day. Vacuum the borate. This will remove the mites.

Other Ways to Remove the Mites

Aside from using borate, you can wash the bedding in hot water. Washing bed sheets at 130 degrees will get rid of the mites. You should also wash the pillows and mattress pads on a regular bass.

Some people don’t take the plastic mattress cover off. Just place the mattress pad on the plastic cover. There are also some mites covers that you can buy.

Tips

Feather pillows are havens for mites. You can wash them with borate to remove the fleas. Or you can just get rid of the feather pillows. It is better to use pillows with foam or synthetic filling.

Materials like cotton and nylon are less susceptible to mites. Wool blankets are very hard to clean. Don’t forget to look into stuffed animals. These may harbor some mites as well.

When you use borate on mites, make sure that pets or children do not get near the powder. Don’t get any on plants either, as it can be toxic. Also make sure that you vacuum the powder thoroughly so no traces remain.
