Although there are various treatments, applying borax detergent on fleas is a good alternative. If you want to use it, you will need the following.

Required Materials

Vacuum
Borax
Broom
Flea shampoo (for your pet)

Step 1

You have to start at the source, which is very likely your pet. Bathe your pet using the flea shampoo. Follow the package directions to remove as many of the fleas as possible. After bathing, use a flea comb to get rid of any straggling fleas. Kill the fleas on the comb by dipping it in a soap water mixture.

Step 2

Get the borax detergent and apply on a small portion on your carpet. If it doesn’t damage the carpet, sprinkle the carpet entirely. Put some extra borax on the areas of the carpet your pet sleeps on. You can also put the borax on the floors. Apply some under your bed, tables and chairs.

When applying borax on the carpet, make sure that it is worked deep into the fibers. Use a broom to get the borax in deep. Using borax detergent on fleas will be successful only if it is worked into the fibers. The reason is it will kill the fleas and their eggs.

Step 3

Leave the borax on the carpet for a period of 24 hours. After that time period elapses, vacuum it. Throw the vacuum bag out when it is full. Replace it with a new one. Keep vacuuming until all the fleas are gone.

Step 4

After a week, repeat the treatment. It may not be necessary, but it
is the best way to ensure that the fleas are really gone.

How to Keep Fleas Away

Borax can eliminate fleas but it cannot prevent them from getting in your home. There are several ways to keep them away however. Trim your lawn; fleas hide there often. Use a flea spray in the moistened areas of your yard.

Use a spot-on treatment for your pet. This is applied every 30 days, and acts as a deterrent against fleas. Don’t let your pet wander off and play in unsanitary places. Scattering cedar wood shavings in the yard have been known to keep fleas at bay.

By using borax detergent on fleas, any threat posed by these pets will be eliminated. But as is often the case, taking preventive steps is much better. By following the suggestions above, you may never have to use borax to get rid of fleas.
