Borax for Lice
There are many ways to get rid of lice, and borax is one of them. This cleansing agent is being used for the removal of fleas. But this can also be used for taking out mites and lice.
How to Use Borax on Lice
The method involves rinsing and vacuuming. You apply borax on the areas where the lice is located. Lice can be found in floors, drapes, furniture and carpets. Just sprinkle the detergent on the affected area. Leave the powder there overnight.
Vacuum the borax after the elapsed time. This will remove a majority of the lice. Repeat the process to totally eliminate the lice. Be thorough when applying borax.
Keep in mind that lice can get on anything that the infected person comes into contact with. These include mats, mattresses, seats, stuffed animals and upholstered furniture. After you use borax on lice, throw away the vacuum bags in an outdoor trashcan.
Other Ways to Kill Lice
You can kill the lice by washing the bed linens, pillows and blankets in 130 degree F water. Lice can also be killed by steam cleaning carpets. There are also home heaters that can set the water at sufficient temperatures to kill lice. This method will also eliminate nits.
Washing bedding regularly will kill lice. It will also help if you use a hot dryer to dry them. If lice have gotten into brushes and combs, immerse them in hot water for 10 minutes minimum. Blow dryers can also remove lice just like borax. But don’t use the blow dryer too near the scalp.
Of course it also helps if you check the child’s hair regularly. Another way to avoid spreading lice is by not sharing brushes, combs, helmets and other accessories. In other words, do not share personal items.
Tips and Warnings
Never let small children or pets go near carpets or furniture being treated with borax. Do not use borax on plants either; it may kill them. Borax usually doesn’t cause any allergic reactions. But if you are sensitive, it is best if you wear a face mask. Those sensitive to powders may also want to wear goggles to protect their eyes.
Many people use borax on lice because it has been proven to be effective. That being said, it is crucial that you take steps to monitor the lice. Borax can remove the lice, but the steps mentioned above will make it easier to totally eliminate them.
