The cat flea season varies from region to region. In the northern hemisphere, it usually begins in the spring or summer and ends around early or mid fall. However, many states do not have a specific season; they experience flea problems all throughout the year.

When Do Fleas Thrive?

The seasons begin at different times throughout the world, so fleas appear at various times. But these parasites are most prevalent when the weather is wet and dry. In this type of weather, flea outbreaks can occur, affecting not just cats but also dogs.

The ideal temperature for flea breeding is about 60 F and up. If the temperature reaches this level, the fleas will breed. This will happen regardless of the season. Adult fleas will be able to breed once they get blood meals.

The combination of high temperatures and blood meals will allow the fleas to breed. 50% humidity will allow the larvae to hatch. One of the reasons why fleas can breed all year round is that temperatures in homes can be controlled. If the temperature is to the fleas’ liking, the fleas will breed regardless of the season.

Cat Flea Season in the US

In many states, the fleas start to come out around March or April. The season of the fleas will continue up to November or December. Most the southern US states do not have the benefit of flea breaks. This is also true of the states on the Pacific border. In those states, the fleas can be found throughout the year.

In other countries, the season will vary. Fleas are also found in nearly every country around the world. In countries with dry and wet weather, the fleas will be around all year long.

Preventing Flea Infestation

The most effective way to protect your cat is by grooming it on a regular basis. There are also spot-on medications that will prevent fleas from getting to your pet. Topical treatments are much better than flea collars. Flea shampoos are good at removing fleas as well.

You should also vacuum the carpets and do general household cleaning. The garden and the yard must also be kept clean. You must also wash your cat’s bedding.

The bottom line is that regardless of when cat flea season begins, you should take steps to keep fleas away. By using the methods described above, the fleas won’t get a chance to settle on your pet, no matter the time of the year.
