Cat Flea Symptoms
The following are the most common cat flea symptoms. Because there are many types of cats, not all of these symptoms may appear. In some cats though, all these signs may manifest.
Skin irritation
The animal will get skin irritations. Dermatitis may result as well as loss of hair. Allergic reaction to fleas will also produce bald spots. These spots will be in the areas the fleas have bitten.
Extensive flea bites will also produce red marks all over the body. The cat will also scratch a lot. You will notice that the red marks / bald spots will be in the areas it is scratching.
Anemia
A very serious cat flea symptom is anemia. This can happen if the flea infestation is immense. Anemia symptoms include loss of energy, lethargy and little appetite. Their gums will lose its pink color. Take the cat to the vet if you notice any of these symptoms. Anemia is a serious ailment that can lead to death.
How to Find Cat Fleas
Hold the cat and pat it gently. Put the cat on a white piece of paper. Rub the animal’s hair back and forth quickly. Check the paper for black specks. Take the cat off the paper. Mist the paper with water. If it turns red, your pet has fleas.
Flea Shampoos
Purchase a cat flea shampoo. Follow the direction as to how much should be applied. Be certain shampoo doesn’t get into the eyes, ears, mouth and nose. Some people like to use baby shampoo. It won’t hurt, but it doesn’t have the same efficiency.
Topical Treatments
After you bathe the cat, dry it. Apply the topical treatment. Usually you have to part the cat’s hair and squeeze out a thin line of the medication. Read the package for more specific instructions.
Most of these treatments have to be applied every month. The nice thing about these products is they work very quickly. It only takes a few hours before the medication takes effect.
Other Options
Flea collars are still used by some to get rid of fleas. Other flea control products are flea powders, spot ons, flea bombs and sprays. You can buy these in pet stores and also on he Net.
One more thing needs to be said. Don’t wait for the cat flea symptoms to appear. Give your pet weekly baths and use the medication as a preventive measure against fleas and other pests.
