Cat fleas in homes are one of the most common issues their owners have to face. Here are some of the facts about fleas you must know about.

Where do Fleas Come From?

These parasites usually thrive in the summer and fall. Cats may acquire them from stray dogs and cats. If the cat wanders off, they may get it from rabbits and then bring it home. Another possible source is second hand furniture.

Dangers

Cat fleas have the larva of the tapeworm. These may get inside the cat as they clean themselves. Fleas may also transmit other diseases. Kittens that acquire fleas may get anemia. Cats with flea allergies may bleed as they scratch incessantly.

Symptoms

Cat fleas in homes can only be treated if you recognize the symptoms. The initial sign is repeated scratching. The cat will often suddenly run around. They do this when the fleas start to bite. Reddish marks may appear all over its body.

You may get flea bites yourself around the ankles. Examine your cat closely. If you see small brown things on it, then the cat has fleas. You may also see salt and pepper like things on the cat; these are flea droppings.

Use a flea comb to remove the fleas. When you brush, the fleas will stick to the comb. Shake the fleas off the comb into a bowl of soapy water. This will drown the fleas.

Treatment and Cures

Spot-on products are the most effective. These are applied to the back of the neck once a month. Other flea control products are collars, shampoos and powders. However, spot-on products are still the most efficient.

Removing Fleas in the House

Vacuum and wash all the cat’s toys and bedding. Vacuum the carpets, rugs, out of the way places, and below the bed. Remove the upholstery from seats and vacuum them. Keep vacuuming until the fleas disappear. You should also use flea repellent sprays in moist dark areas in the yard. Use flea bombs only if these methods don’t work.

Tips and Suggestions

Give your cat proper nutrition; cats with stronger immune systems will be less prone to fleas and other parasites. Regular grooming of cats will also help.

The best way to get rid of cat fleas in homes is by grooming and keeping the environment clean. As long as the indoor and outdoor environments are kept clean, re-infestation will not occur.
