Check for the Presence of Fleas
Make sure fleas are really the problem. Place the cat on a white paper towel. Rub its back in a downward manner. Gather the black specks that fall on the paper. Spray a bit of water on the towel. If it turns red, it is flea dirt. It is confirmation that there are fleas in it.
Shampoos
Flea shampoos offer a quick solution. However, you can only use shampoos meant for cats. This solution only works if you can get your cat to take a bath. But if your cat isn’t infested and you can give it a bath, shampoos will work.
Sprays
Treatment of cat fleas also comes in the form of sprays. Some sprays can be used for the cat and home. Others can only be used on the animal. To avoid problems, it is best to use sprays with natural ingredients. Sprays are a short term solution to the problem. They work best on cats with few fleas.
Flea Collars
These are among the most popular and cheapest flea prevention products. But flea collars have limitations. They are not effective in getting rid of flea infestation. At best they protect the head and neck from these pests. One more thing: make sure the flea collar has safe ingredients. Sensitive cats may develop allergies.
Oral Flea Medications
These pills are given monthly. Their objective is to prevent larvae from hatching. These medications cannot destroy adult fleas, so they are usually used with shampoos. These pills are usually prescribed by a vet. The reason is the dosage will hinge on the cat’s weight, age and health condition.
Spot-on Medication
These come in the form of liquids that are dropped on the cat’s back. The medication contains ingredients that destroy the fleas. These treatments work best if applied every 30 days.
Some spot-on medications can be applied every three months. This is by far the most popular method as it has proven effective. However, its efficiency is reduced if treatment is stopped.
Treatment of cat fleas work best if the environment is kept clean. While these methods are effective, it will be doubly so if the cat’s playground is tidy. Aside from applying medication, washing the bedding and their toys will also help.
