Chiggers Control
Chiggers are actually the larva of a specific species of mites formally known as trombiculid mites. Their common names are berry bugs, harvest mites and red bugs; among others.
These mites are found outdoors; in grasslands, woodlands, bushes, fruit gardens and even in your lawn and public parks. They are most rampant during the early days of the hot season.
These tiny creatures are so small that you will not readily notice them particularly since they are hiding under thick bushes and shrubberies. They are only about 1/60 of an inch in length and they generally have an orange-chrome color.
Chiggers Control
The adult chigger does not bite humans. It is only the larva, or the chigger itself, that feed on humans hence; chiggers control is the more important measure to undertake to prevent these mites from burrowing under your skin.
The best way to prevent a chigger attack is not by avoiding the outdoors but protecting yourself from these chiggers while you are exposed to areas where these creatures thrive.
Using insect repellant lotions or sprays can dissuade chiggers from attaching to you and burrowing under your skin. You should also make sure that you are well-covered particularly in your extremities since these are the areas that chiggers commonly attach themselves to and then travel upwards on your body.
Wearing socks, long pants and long-sleeved shirts while you are exploring the outdoors is an excellent way of avoiding chigger infestation.
Treatments for Bites
Bites are actually not an accurate term for chigger infestation since they do not actually bite you but instead they burrow under your skin and feed off by chewing parts of your skin.
After the chigger has fed off of you, you will begin to start itching, usually within an hour or sometimes up to three hours after chigger feeding. Within a day or two, you will notice that the itching has worsened.
This is due to the enzyme which the chigger has injected on you while it is feeding. You may also start to notice red marks on your skin and these can either be flat or raised.
You should immediately take a bath or shower after you have noticed these symptoms to clean-off the area where the chigger fed-off from. Applying anti-itch creams or lotions is recommended after your shower to reduce itching and also to prevent yourself from scratching the infected areas.
If the allergic reaction is severe, you should see your doctor so you can get prescriptions for anti-allergy medication which may include creams with steroids.
