Clover mites do not harm pets, humans or furnishings inside your house. They however, harm your plants, particularly the grass in your garden or yard. Clover mites control therefore is geared towards preserving your lawn and other plants.

On the other hand, while they pose no harm to you or your pets, they can get inside your house and they usually travel in droves. These unsightly creatures are more commonly found in bright, sunny parts both inside your house and the surrounding areas.

What are Clover Mites?

Clover mites are scientifically known as Bryobia praetiosa. They are known to leave red stains on the surface when stepped on. The red stains are not their blood but are actually their color, clover mites being reddish-brown in color.

They feed on the juices of the grass as well as clover plants, hence; their moniker. They are mostly present during the spring and fall months and they would usually hide in small cracks to shed their skin and also to lay their eggs.

These mites are small, smaller than the size of a pin head; and they have been known to feed off over two hundred different plant varieties. When vegetation dies, this is the time that they start to move into houses or buildings, finding cracks and crevices to hide in.

Each female mite can lay up to seventy eggs and since they travel in droves, you can find hundreds of eggs laid in the areas where they are hiding. It is in the springtime that they lay their eggs.

Clover Mites Control

There are several ways to eliminate clover mites. You can use specific products that are known to kill these mites or you can also seek the help of a professional pest control company to do the job for you.

On the other hand, if you wish to eliminate these pests yourself by using certain products, you can start by spraying on your outer walls up to the windows; since these areas are usually where the mites crawl, looking for cracks.

You should also spray on the lawn nearest your house, about a ten to twenty feet wide strip, particularly during the months when they usually come out. As mentioned, these are during the fall and spring months.

Since these mites feed off grass, you should remove grass that is about eighteen to twenty-four inches within close proximity to your house. For your garden, you may use mite control sprays to kill these clover mites and discourage them from infesting your lawn and plants.
