Flea Bites on Cats – Symptoms
The following are the most common symptoms of flea bites in cats. Because cats have different characteristics, not all of the signs may manifest.
Signs and Indicators
If the cat has an allergic reaction to flea bites it will start scratching, chewing or licking the bitten areas. Repeated scratching will lead to hair loss. In more severe cases this will produce scabs or open sores. If this happens, other types of bacterial infection may occur.
The area most affected by this is the rump. This is in front of the cat’s tail. Experts don’t know why this is so, but it’s probably the place fleas find most accessible. Aside from hair loss, cats may also develop hot spots.
Allergic Reaction
The symptoms of flea bites in cats are harder to detect if the cat isn’t allergic to it. Studies have shown that some cats experience little or no itching even if there are several fleas around. In contrast, a flea allergic cat will react to the smallest bite.
Treatments
There are several products available that can treat cat fleas. The quickest way to remove the fleas is by giving the cat a flea shampoo or flea dip. Sometimes baby shampoo is used instead. The problem is that some cats can be difficult to bathe.
You can also give the cat pills. These medications may be bought over the counter. But some are administered by the vet. If you aren’t sure what type to get, ask your vet.
Non-Chemical Treatments
A flea comb can be used to remove fleas off your cat. Just comb the cat’s hair and watch as the fleas cling to the comb. Shake the comb off in a bowl of soap and water. Diatomaceous earth (DE) can be used too. Just apply the power all over the flooring, carpets and yard. It is also very safe with no side effects.
Important Considerations
Fleas usually come out around summertime. But in dry regions they can be a year long problem. Fleas are less likely to be a problem in regions with winter seasons. If the cat doesn’t go outside, it is less likely to get fleas. But if your cat plays outdoors and it is hot, you have to keep an eye on these fleas.
As a pet owner, you need to be aware of the symptoms of flea bites in cats. By recognizing the signs immediately, you will be able to take the right steps to prevent it from spreading.
