Flea Collar

There are various ways to eliminate fleas from your pets and to prevent infestation. One of these is by using a flea collar on your pet. This is your usual pet collar except that it is infused with chemicals that repel and kill fleas.

You can find all types of flea collars in your local supermarket, a pet supplies store and your vet’s clinic. If you don’t have any idea which type of collar is best for your pet’s flea infestation, it is advisable to ask your vet for recommendations on specific products.

Some collars work best with more intense flea infestation so getting the right one is tantamount to your success of getting rid of the fleas from your pets.

Types of Flea Collars

There are three basic types of collars for fleas. One is where the collar release gas that is poisonous to the fleas. This will repel fleas and prevent them from infesting your pet.

Some pet owners have observed that this type of collar is more effective around the neck area and the head and not as effective on the entire body.

The other type is where the collar releases some form of toxic chemical that is absorbed on your pet’s skin. When a flea starts to feed on your pet, it will get killed because of the toxic chemical infused on your pet’s skin.

The last type is an electronic collar. This collar is also known as an ultrasonic collar because it emits some type of noise that only fleas and ticks can hear and the noise is so unbearable for these little critters that they will stay away from your dog.

A few pet owners find this a bit expensive plus the noise is not released regularly enough that fleas may still bite your pets. On the other hand, there are electronic collars that are also infused with a special chemical to keep the fleas away, giving you two ways to prevent flea infestation.

Non-Chemical Collars

If you are worried that the toxic chemicals may also be harmful to your pets, there are now non-chemical collars that you can check out. These collars are infused with herbal solutions as well as essential oils that are known to ward off fleas.

These are usually available in your local pet store, your vet’s office and local grocery. Since these use natural ingredients, a lot of pet owners are opting to get these collars instead of the usual ones.
