Fleas in House

Using salt to remove fleas in carpets can be as efficient as other more expensive products. They are also very easy to use.

Step 1

Sprinkle the salt in the carpet. Make sure to apply a liberal amount. You can also apply some on the floor as fleas may be hiding there as well.

Step 2

Leave the salt overnight or better yet, for 24 hours. Allow it to sink through the carpet. After 24 hours, vacuum the carpet and the rugs. The vacuum will suck up all the salt and fleas. When the vacuum bag is full, throw it in the garbage can.

Step 3

If the fleas are still there, repeat the process. If there are lots of fleas, you may have to apply salt every two weeks for a few weeks. Don’t forget to vacuum after applying the salt.

Safety Issues

Using salt to remove fleas in carpets is preferred by many because it is very safe. It is not harmful to pets or people. Putting the salt directly on the animal isn’t harmful either. However, it is better to rinse them off as the animals may feel itchy. However, it will not cause any infections.

Borate Based Products

Aside from salt, borate based cleaners and insecticides are also becoming popular. These cleaners are available in many forms, but usage is basically the same.

Simply spray the powder all over your carpet and rugs. Leave it there for five or seven days. After that time period has elapsed, vacuum the rug.

Treating Your Pet

Regardless of how much salt you use, it will be for naught if your pet isn’t treated for fleas. Give the animal a flea bath to remove the fleas. There are flea shampoos available. Once you use it, you’ll see the fleas dropping dead in the water. You can also use a flea comb to remove the fleas.

When the fleas stick to the comb, dip it in a container of water and detergent. The fleas will die. Numerous flea prevention products are also available on the Net. You can also ask your vet for specific types that you can use on your pet.
