Fleas in House
There is no reason to put up with fleas in the house as there are several ways to remove them. The following methods should get rid of these insects totally. But it will take some time, especially if infestation is severe.
Wash the Pet Bedding
This doesn’t just refer to the pet’s bed. It also means every cloth, fabric or sheet your pet sleeps on. Wash the throw rug, the sheets, pillows, bathroom rug etc. Any and all material your pet lies on needs to be washed.
Use a Spray with IGR Ingredient
IGR stands for insect growth regulator. This is a very effective tool in getting rid of these insects. Unlike other treatments, this protein can reach down into carpet fibers.
Make sure the spray you buy has this ingredient. If the label says it has pyriproxyfen or methoprene, then it has IGR. Do not use foggers without IGR. They are not effective.
Vacuum the House
Vacuum every room in the house. Make sure you vacuum every corner and cranny. Be certain you clean below every furniture piece in the house. Don’t forget to vacuum the basement and floor boards. In short, clean every area where dust can gather.
Fleas like to hide in places that get little or no sunlight. They also like cool and humid places, so vacuum those as well. Vacuum areas where there are flea debris (feces with dried blood).
Make sure your pet is nowhere near you because the fleas might jump over to them. Another way to get rid of fleas in the house is by attaching a flea collar on the vacuum cleaner.
When the vacuum bag is full, put it in a trash bag and put in a trash can. Make sure the trash can is outside your house. The can must be covered.
Give the Dog a Bath
Do not use a flea shampoo with carbaryl, d-limonene, pyrethrins or chlorpyrifos. These may cause pet irritation. Wash beginning from the neck. This will prevent the fleas from hopping to the head.
Use a spot-on or oral medication if there are many fleas. Do not use a flea collar. Pets may get irritated by it. Ultrasonic devices, brewer’s yeast, vitamin B1 supplements and herbal collars are not effective either.
Clean the Backyard
Larvae hide in dark green bushes. Trim it to expose the larvae and kill it. Remove any moist spots by exposing them to the sun.
Follow Up
Some eggs will survive the cleanup you did. To prevent them from hatching again, vacuum every other day. You should also trim the lawn. Keep doing this for a few more weeks to make sure the eggs don’t hatch.
Using Flea Combs
You can check your pet for fleas by using a flea comb. You can use this to remove the fleas too. These are especially designed combs; ordinary types will not do.
It takes a lot of patience to remove fleas in the house. But if you keep your place clean, the odds of an infestation repeating will go down.
