Fleas on dogs can spread rapidly, and it won’t just be a problem for your pet; the fleas will go all over the furniture and also on people. To avoid this problem, you have to eliminate these pests as soon as you see them.

Symptoms and Signs

The dog will scratch or bite excessively around the outside and inside of the thighs. They will also chew their tail and scratch their ears and back. In many cases, hair loss will be experienced. Red, raised bumps and skin lesions will manifest.

Flea Dirt

The present of flea dirt is another sign the dog has the pests. Flea dirt is the excrement of the flea. It has a rust brown color. The color is due to the dried blood it contains. To be certain, place a couple of drops of water in it. Smear this with a white cloth. If it’s flea dirt, the smear will have a reddish hue.

Grooming and Shampooing

Fleas on dogs can be removed by using a flea shampoo. These shampoos are available in pet shops. If you use a regular pet shampoo, add some neem oil to it. This will get rid of the fleas. If the dog doesn’t have fleas yet, regular baths with flea repellents will suffice.

You can also use a flea comb. Make sure the comb has fine teeth so the pests will get stuck between them. After each stroke, you should immerse the comb in water and soap. If the dog has moist infected parts, apply aloe vera or tea tree oil. This can help remove the skin irritation.

Other Treatments

Spot-on treatments are among the most popular medications. There are flea control treatments that are in powdered form. Flea collars are frowned on by some as being ineffective or dangerous.

However, natural flea collars may prove more effective. You can use a bandana and apply lavender oil or eucalyptus oil on it. Once you have applied the oils, you can place this around the dog’s neck just like a dog collar.

As you can see, there are many ways to remove fleas on dogs. For any of these methods to work, it is imperative that you apply them consistently.

If you using commercial products, follow the directions as stated. Don’t just treat the animal when the fleas are there; apply the medications regularly so they don’t get the chance to appear in the first place.
