Fleas Treatment – Home Remedies
Home remedies for fleas work as well as the products sold in stores. However, their efficiency will be higher if applied at the earliest time possible. If the flea infestation is severe, it will take longer for the treatments to work.
Natural Flea Collars
Natural flea collars are made by adding essential oils to a collar or bandana. The most widely used essential oils are lavender, eucalyptus oil or rosemary.
Many homeowners prefer them because there are no harsh chemicals in the collar. Natural flea collars may also be used with vacuum cleaners. Just put the clipped ends of the collars in the vacuum bags.
Once the fleas are sucked in the vacuum they will be destroyed. Unlike other flea collars, natural collars do not generate fumes.
Water and Vinegar
Water and vinegar are two of the most widely used home remedies for fleas. Combine water and white vinegar in equal parts. Put the mixture in a spray bottle. Spray it on carpets, furniture, the yard and other areas infested by the fleas.
Cedar Shavings
Sprinkling cedar shavings around the house will also keep the fleas away. Cedar shavings in the garden and flowerbeds will also keep fleas at bay. These are particularly effective against cat fleas.
Hydrogen Peroxide
Although flea shampoos are available, many prefer to use water with hydrogen peroxide. As the animal is being bathed, hydrogen peroxide is applied to the coat. However you must avoid the animal’s eyes, nose and ears.
Borax
Borax can be applied to carpets, rugs and beddings. Borax can also be applied to furniture afflicted by fleas.
Detergent Water and Flea Combs
To remove persistent fleas, use a flea comb on your pet. As the parasites stick to the comb, dip it in a bowl of water detergent. This will kill the fleas.
Salt and DE (Diatomaceous Earth)
Before you vacuum the furniture, you can apply salt on the furniture, carpet and bedding. Leave the salt on the furniture and flooring for 24 hours. This will go a long way towards helping remove the fleas.
Diatomaceous earth can also be used in the same way. DE can also be applied outside your home. Sprinkling these in the dark areas around the garden will keep the pests at bay.
These home remedies for fleas will definitely help you in getting rid of these pests. If you are going to use any of these methods, make sure to apply them on a regular basis.
