There are many kinds of flea treatments available, but prevention is still the best method. You can keep fleas from spreading by following these simple tips and guidelines.

Vacuum Regularly

Vacuum your home on a regular basis (weekly or every couple of weeks). Pay close attention to cracks, crevices, dark corners and under the furniture. You should vacuum the areas that your pet visits regularly. Make sure to dispose of the vacuum bags correctly. This is especially important if there are fleas in the bag.

Keeping Your Pet Flea Free

Don’t let your pet get close to stray animals; they may carry fleas and other diseases. It is okay to take your pet to the park, but don’t let it make contact with other stray animals. Bathe your pet weekly and apply anti flea treatment on it.

Don’t let them play in dirty places; keep your home and garden clean. You should also clean the pet’s bedding every week. Use hot soapy water. Examine the bedding for larvae or flea eggs. Remove any sign of them immediately.

Pet Combs

A pet comb can be used to remove these pests from your pet. First, prepare a can of soapy water. As you comb the pet, fleas will attach to the comb. Dip the comb in the water to kill the fleas. Repeat combing as often as necessary.

Sunlight Helps

Trim the grass and cut the foliage so sunlight can get in the garden. Flea larvae will die in the sunlight, so keep your garden bright and sunny. Get rid of deadwood, dead branches and fallen leaves in the yard. Never let the foliage accumulate on the ground.

Consult Your Vet

Take your pet to the vet if you aren’t sure of what anti-flea medication to use. They may be able to suggest other treatments. A checkup with the vet will also let you know if the pet is afflicted with other diseases.

Monitor for Flea Infestation Signs

Here are some signs your pet has fleas: intense scratching around the lower back and tail, raw patches where the pet has scratched itself and flea debris. The debris are black and have dried blood. The fleas will also be visible.

Remember that the flea treatments for dogs and cats sold are most effective if there isn’t an infestation yet. By keeping these basic guidelines in mind, you’ll be able to spot the pests in time, if not prevent them altogether.
