Natural Flea Control in Carpets
Insecticides can kill fleas, but they are also toxic. The following are safe and natural ways to control fleas in carpets and your home.
Three Step Process
It’s not enough to just remove the fleas from rugs and carpets. First, you must rid your pet of the fleas. Second is to remove the fleas from the carpets and your home. The final step is to prevent re-infestation from occurring.
Getting Rid of Fleas on Rugs and Carpets
Prepare some baking soda and salt. Sprinkle equivalent amounts of salt and baking soda on the carpet. Make sure that the carpet is dry. If the carpet is wet, the baking soda will leave residues. Leave the baking soda there overnight.
The next day, vacuum the carpet. Remove all traces of salt and baking soda. As you vacuum, you will see dead fleas and their eggs mixed with the baking soda and salt. Baking soda and salt works by dehydrating the insects.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE)
Another natural way to control fleas in carpets is by sprinkling some DE on it. To use, spray the dust onto the carpet freely. Be sure to apply DE around the carpet’s corners, as it is there that many fleas reside. Leave it there for a while then vacuum it off.
Ridding Your Pet of Fleas
Add some hydrogen peroxide to the water and bathe your pet in it. This will remove a lot of the fleas. You can also use a flea shampoo to get rid of the fleas. Ensure that the shampoo is pesticide free and has natural ingredients. Leave the shampoo on your pet for a few minutes before rinsing it.
After bathing your pet, use a flea comb to remove the remaining fleas and eggs. Have a cup of water with soap nearby. Dip the comb there to kill the fleas. Note: don’t let your pet near the carpet when removing the fleas.
Avoid flea Infestation
Leave some cedar shavings around the yard to keep fleas away. Mix water with a few drops of essential lavender oil and spray the moist areas around the garden. This will keep the fleas off your pet, garden and home.
As the information above shows, there are natural ways to control fleas in carpets. But you have to do more than just clean the carpet. You must also take steps to cleanse your pet and your whole household.
