In order to protect our pet cats and dogs from flea infestation, we usually rely on methods and products that are especially formulated to eliminate fleas. However, many of these products contain too many chemicals that may pose as much of a health risk as the fleas they were designed to kill. To forego such potential hazards, and to save money as well, it is very easy for one to concoct a safe and natural flea spray of their very own.

The ingredients and materials needed in making a natural flea spray are as follows: 4 lemons, 6 cups of water, 2 tablespoons of salt, a large pot, a stove, a mesh strainer, and a spray bottle. Other materials to be used later before applying the spray are a mild pet shampoo (preferably organic), soap and a flea comb.

For the first step, the lemons are cut in thin slices and then placed into the pot. The 6 cups of water are poured in, followed by the 2 tablespoons of salt. Turning the stove on high, the mixture is boiled for 2 minutes, after which the stove is turned off and the mixture is left to steep for a period of 24 hours. Once the mixture is done brewing, the lemon slices and the pulp are strained and the liquid is poured in the spray bottle.

Before applying the natural flea spray, the pet should be given a bath first. Use only a mild pet shampoo, not a special anti-flea brand that is filled with chemicals. The soap will take care of the fleas as any type of soap is deadly to them. Allow the soap to set for 5 to 10 minutes, and then rinse it well. Once the pet has had his bath, use a flea comb to brush off traces of dead fleas from the fur. Afterwards, it’s time to use the natural flea spray.

But if a bath is enough to kill fleas, what’s the use of the natural flea spray? Basically, the spray is a preventive measure to keep new fleas from jumping onto one’s pet. The spray should be used on a regular basis to maintain its effectiveness. It is safe to apply on pets of all ages, but do be careful not to spray the pet in the eyes. It is also advisable to use the spray on the bedding of the pet, as well as on parts of the house where the pet frequently hangs out in.
