Removing Ticks
Removing ticks is necessary because these parasites are capable of transmitting disease to your dog. Before you can remove these pests, you must know where to look for them.
Where do Ticks Hide?
Ticks on dogs can be found in several places. The most common areas are skin folds, in and around the ear and between its toes. Ticks can also hide themselves in the insides of the legs, particularly where it joins to the body. Some are also found around the dog’s neck. In short, the ticks are mostly found in areas where there is very little hair.
Guide to Finding and Removing Ticks
Wear latex gloves and have an empty can by your side. Run your hands all around the dog’s body. The main focus is on the body parts mentioned earlier. But don’t neglect the other areas because the ticks may have spread.
Use your hands to part the hair. Look for any raised areas, as they are a sign that ticks are around. This will be easier to do if you are in a well lit area. A flashlight may also come in handy.
Tick sizes vary. Some are about the size of a pencil point. If engorged, it will be double or triple that size. When you see the tick, use the tweezers or other removal tool to grab it. Do it as near the skin as possible.
Don’t squeeze the tick because bacteria may spill onto the skin. Pull the tick slowly up. Don’t turn or twist it. It’s okay if some of the dog’s skin is removed. Apply gentle pressure if there is bleeding.
Put the tick in the can. Repeat the process as often as necessary. You can throw the can out with the garbage or flush it down the toilet.
Notes
If a section of the tick’s head remains stuck in the body, use the tweezers to pull it off. If you can’t remove them, it is all right. They will fall off on their own eventually.
Wash the affected area with water and mild soap. Usually the skin area will heal in a few days. You should only contact the vet if the spot doesn’t clear up in a few days.
Removing ticks can take some time, but allergic reactions or infections rarely occur. To keep ticks away, trim the grass. Ticks like to hide in grass and plants. Cleaning your yard will also keep these parasites away.
