Sand Fleas Control
A sand flea is also known as sand fly, no-see-um, no-see-em, sand gnat and punky; among many other monikers. But a sand flea by any other name is still a pest and its bites can be pretty itchy.
Contrary to popular belief, sand fleas are actually crustaceans and not insects. They are small crustaceans that are found in different beaches all across the globe. These are also found in wetlands, marshlands and creeks. They measure only about three millimeters in length and can have a sort of pale gray color or brownish hue.
Sand fleas control procedures include using special products that use specific chemicals to kill the fleas.
Sand Fleas Control Measures
First of all, if you are going to visit the beach, you need to protect yourself from all sorts of insects and little critters that could bite you and these critters include sand fleas.
So as part of your sand fleas control measure, you need to cover yourself with a good insect repellant; just make sure that whatever you will be using will be effective for repelling sand fleas as well.
You can find a good number of excellent insect repellents in your local grocery or drugstore.
On the other hand, if you want a more or less permanent solution to sand fleas, particularly if you are living within close distance to the beach or wetlands; you can use chemical solutions directly on the infested area.
There are products that are specifically used just for outdoors and those that are safer to use indoors so carefully read the product indication prior to using it. Products that contain bifenthrin, deltamethrin or permethrin are okay since these are known chemicals that kill pests.
Why Immediate Action is Necessary
It is of vital importance that you work on the problem right away to avoid being bitten. A bite from a sand flea is not only uncomfortable and painful, but it could lead to more serious health problems.
Sand fleas are known vectors or carriers of certain diseases particularly leishmaniasis. A more serious problem is the Chandipura virus which is like rabies and if not immediately addressed can be very fatal.
If you are visiting specific beaches, you should check out if the beach has had an episode or episodes of sand flea infestation. If this is the case, you might want to consider visiting another beach or at least keeping yourself well-protected to prevent from being bitten by these shrimp-like crustaceans.
